The Spiritual Path of Kundalini Yoga:
Awakening Inner Light
Kundalini Yoga is considered the foundation of all yoga forms, as it is essentially about the power of Kundalini, which underlies all yoga sadhana (spiritual practice). But what exactly is Kundalini? Kundalini is described as a pulsating, energetic serpent of light that rests coiled at the base of the spine, near the coccyx. This energy lies dormant until it is awakened, at which point it begins a transformative journey of awareness.
When Kundalini awakens, it ascends through subtle energy channels, the nadis that make up our energetic body. During this journey, the seven chakras are activated, “energy centers” that lie along the spine and form the connection between body and mind. This activation is a process of deep transformation, breaking through blockages and revealing hidden aspects of ourselves.
An important part of this path is passing the three Granthis “knots” of attachment and inner resistance, in which our life lessons and karmic patterns are stored. These knots symbolize old issues from the past that block our consciousness. Only by being open to these lessons and finding the right “code” of inner understanding can the Kundalini continue its path to higher states of consciousness.
During its ascent, the Kundalini asks for confrontation with the blockages in our chakras. This process brings us into contact with old emotions, fixed ideas and even physical discomforts that we have previously ignored. Opening the nadis, activating the chakras and unlocking the Granthis requires courage, surrender and self-reflection. Through this inner cleansing we become aware of the deeper layers of our existence.
When the Kundalini finally reaches the highest chakra - the crown chakra at the top of our head - it opens the gate to Enlightenment. This is the state in which we experience a deep unity with the universe and our true essence. Kundalini Yoga and meditation are the keys to this inner transformation, leading us to a state of transcendent consciousness and spiritual fulfillment.
Kundalini awakening is a sacred journey, a path to wholeness, wisdom and connection with the divine within.
Kundalini Yoga has several principles:
Kriyas, breathing techniques, Asanas (basic sitting postures), Mudras (finger postures), Bhandas, Mantras and the right way of practicing.
Kriya’s
Kriya’s or yoga series, consists of one or more exercise(s) and/or one or more meditations and brings about a certain change in the state of the body and mind. A kriya affects the mind, body and spirit.
Kapalabhati (Breath of Fire)
Kundalini Yoga uses an extensive range of breathing techniques. They are more extensive and refined than other yoga forms. The breath, the rhythm and the depth, is connected to the state of health, the state of consciousness and the emotional state. Kundalini Yoga uses the breath to change the energy state of the body. We know the slow breath, the breath of fire, interrupted breaths, whistling breaths and sitali breathing (curling of the tongue).
Asana’s
Asana’s Asanas are basic sitting postures, all parts of the body are connected and influence each other. So the posture should be balanced and easy. The posture should reflect harmony, in certain deep meditations the consciousness can change in such a way that you temporarily lose your normal body feeling. The surface you are sitting on should not be hard or cold. We know a number of basic postures, the lotus posture, the rock posture (sitting on the knees), cross-legged sitting, sitting on a chair, corpse posture, crow posture, cat/cow posture and frog posture.
The Spiritual Power of Mudras:
Keys to Inner Harmony
Mudras, the sacred postures of the hands and fingers, are much more than just physical gestures. They are an energetic language that reflects our consciousness and inner state. In the ancient wisdom of the yogis, the hands were seen as a map of the universe within ourselves. Each area of the hand corresponds to specific parts of the body, the brain and even our deeper emotions and behaviors.
These subtle gestures allow us to make a direct connection between body, mind and spirit. By bending, crossing, stretching or placing the fingers on certain points of the body, we can influence the energy flows within ourselves. Mudras are like keys that open hidden doors, giving us access to our inner wisdom and healing power.
Each mudra carries a specific energy and intention. By consciously working with these gestures, we can release blockages, restore balance and experience a deeper harmony between our physical and spiritual selves. They help us not only to connect with our bodies and minds, but also to reach deeper into our consciousness.
Reming us that the power of healing and transformation is always within reach, literally in our own hands. They are an invitation to go within in silence and speak the language of energy and consciousness, a language that connects us to the divine within ourselves and in all that surrounds us.
Bhanda’s
The Bhandas are certain combinations of muscle contractions. These contractions change the blood circulation, the pressure on the nerves and the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. They also direct the flow of prana or life force into the nadis or energy channels through which the Kundalini energy flows. They collect the body's energy to raise consciousness and to heal the body. The Jalandhara bhanda, the Uddiyana bhanda and the Mula bhanda. If you apply these three together, the combination is called Maha bhanda, the great bhanda of Kundalini Yoga.
Mantra’s
Mantra means sending out thought waves: it is a method of regulating thinking. There are many mantras and each mantra has its own quality, rhythm and effect. The combination of sound, resonance and rhythm of the mantra changes the state of consciousness which in turn determines the pattern of the flow of thoughts. Mantra is not just an arbitrary designation, it is a stream of sound related to an object. When the vibration of a certain sound corresponds to what it refers to, it is a sacred language. Chanting mantras is the union of ourselves with the Creator through vibration and determines what level of consciousness you want to reach. The power of the mantra is determined by your level of consciousness. Mantra Yoga connects the individual to the whole.
The right way to practice Kundalini Yoga
Many Kundalini exercises are fast and powerful. If you are a novice yogi, you build up the pace slowly and quietly. An exercise is concluded by inhaling, holding the breath for a moment, exhaling and applying the Mula bhanda. This helps to enhance the effect of the exercise and to allow the energy to flow to the highest energy centers. Important after exercise is also the relaxation after each exercise. You relax in an easy position for one to three minutes. The end of the yoga series is followed by a long relaxation. You will find that it will ground you again and bring you back to reality.
